The City of Melbourne starts using AI for waste management.
One of the problems of the City of Melbourne, one of the most famous cities of Australia, is hygiene and illegal waste dumping. Nokia is involved in helping solve the problem by developing AI technology, Nokia Scene Analytics, to analyze the situation and find solutions for cleaner and safer streets and pedestrian areas.
The City of Melbourne has lightened the load and decreased the visits of waste contractors by installing large-capacity compactors in neighborhoods. The local government wanted to understand the dumping behavior of the locals to design a better waste management system and reduce illegal waste dumping for a more hygienic environment. Here is where Nokia can take part.
The City of Melbourne cooperated with Nokia to utilize IoT (Internet of Things) by installing cameras and sensors to monitor people's waste dumping behavior. Nokia Scene Analytics is used to filter and collect information, e.g., detect the amount of waste and analyze it with other information such as the performance of the compactor. The algorithm will analyze how the dumping behaviors correlated with the compactor downtime, detect illegal waste dumping, and create real-time alerts.
The purposes of the project are to create a hygienic and safe city with appropriate waste management, control the operation of the compactor to reduce maintenance costs, and reduce carbon footprints.
