ตอนนี้เรารู้กันแล้วว่า อิหร่านปิดช่องแคบฮอร์มุซ ที่เป็นเส้นทางส่งน้ำมันเฉลี่ยวันละ 20 ล้านบาร์เรล หรือคิดเป็น 1 ใน 5 ของปริมาณการบริโภคน้ำมันทั่วโลก
แต่คำถามที่น่าคิดต่อคือ ในเมื่อเส้นทางนี้ถูกปิด แล้วจะมีเส้นทางอื่นอีกไหม ที่น้ำมันไม่ต้องผ่านช่องแคบนี้
คำตอบคือ ก็อาจจะมี แต่ก็ส่งน้ำมันได้ไม่เท่ากับการส่งผ่านช่องแคบฮอร์มุซอยู่ดี
เส้นทางที่ว่านั้นมีอะไรบ้าง ?
ลงทุนแมนจะเล่าให้ฟัง
ก่อนอื่น เราต้องหลับตาลง แล้วนึกภาพแผนที่ไปพร้อมกัน..
เลยช่องแคบฮอร์มุซออกมา มันคือ อ่าวโอมานที่ออกไปสู่ทะเลได้เลยทันที
ดังนั้น แปลว่าถ้าส่งออกน้ำมันโดยไม่ผ่านช่องแคบฮอร์มุซ ก็ส่งผ่านโดยตรงมาที่อ่าวโอมานแทน
ซึ่งก็มีประเทศที่ทำได้จริง ๆ นั่นก็คือ สหรัฐอาหรับเอมิเรตส์หรือยูเออี ที่มีท่อส่งน้ำมัน Habshan-Fujairah ยาว 220 กิโลเมตรเชื่อมไปยังโอมาน
โครงการนี้เกิดขึ้นจาก Mubadala องค์กรรัฐบาลอาบูดาบี
เพื่อลดความเสี่ยงของช่องแคบฮอร์มุซมาตั้งแต่ปี 2006
แต่ปัญหาคือ เส้นทางส่งน้ำมันนี้ส่งได้สูงสุดแค่วันละ 1.5 ล้านบาร์เรล เมื่อเทียบกับปริมาณน้ำมันส่งออกผ่านช่องแคบฮอร์มุซทั้งหมดแล้ววันละ 20 ล้านบาร์เรล
แปลว่า ก็เหลืออีกราว 18.5 ล้านบาร์เรล ที่ต้องส่งออกน้ำมันไปยังเส้นทางอื่นแทน
ซึ่งจริง ๆ ก็มีอีกประเทศหนึ่งที่ทำแบบยูเออี นั่นคือ ซาอุดีอาระเบีย ที่ยอมลงทุนสร้างท่อส่งน้ำมัน East-West ด้วยระยะทางกว่า 1,500 กิโลเมตร
ระยะทางนี้ไกลแค่ไหน ?
มันใกล้เคียงกับระยะทางตัดตรงจากเหนือสุดของไทยจากอำเภอแม่สาย จังหวัดเชียงราย ลงไปใต้สุดถึงอำเภอเบตง จังหวัดยะลาเลยทีเดียว
ระบบท่อนี้ สร้างขึ้นมาในช่วงทศวรรษ 1980 หรือในตอนที่เกิดสงครามอิหร่าน-อิรัก เพื่อช่วยลดความเสี่ยงในการพึ่งพาการส่งออกน้ำมันทางใดทางหนึ่งมากเกินไป
โดยท่อนี้ จะเริ่มต้นที่เมือง Abqaiq ในอ่าวเปอร์เซีย ลากยาวมาถึงเมือง Yanbu ในทะเลแดงของอียิปต์ แล้วค่อยขนถ่ายน้ำมันลงเรือออกไปยังทะเลแทน
ซึ่งปัจจุบัน การปรับปรุงอย่างต่อเนื่องของซาอุดีอาระเบีย
ทำให้ท่อนี้รองรับการส่งได้สูงสุดวันละ 7 ล้านบาร์เรล
แต่เมื่อรวมกับท่อส่งน้ำมันของยูเออีไปโอมานวันละ 1.5 ล้านบาร์เรล แปลว่าตอนนี้ก็สามารถส่งออกน้ำมันโดยไม่ผ่านช่องแคบฮอร์มุซได้แค่วันละ 8.5 ล้านบาร์เรล
สุดท้ายแล้ว ก็ยังไม่พอที่จะชดเชยการส่งออกน้ำมันผ่านช่องแคบฮอร์มุซวันละ 20 ล้านบาร์เรลได้อยู่ดี
เพราะประเทศอื่น ๆ อย่างอิรัก กาตาร์ คูเวต และบาห์เรน
ที่ต้องใช้ช่องแคบฮอร์มุซส่งออกน้ำมัน ก็ยังไม่สามารถหาช่องทางอื่นมาชดเชยได้
แม้อิรัก จะยังพอมีทางออกส่งน้ำมันไปทางอื่นได้ เช่น ทางจอร์แดนหรือซีเรียไปยังทะเลเมดิเตอร์เรเนียน แต่ปัจจุบัน ก็ยังไม่เริ่มต้นสร้างแบบจริงจังสักที
คราวนี้ ถ้าเราไปดูช่องแคบฮอร์มุซอีกครั้ง มันจะเหมือนกับปากนกที่ยื่นออกไป คำถามคือ แล้วถ้าเราขุดคลองใหม่แทนช่องแคบฮอร์มุซเลยได้หรือไม่ ?
คำตอบคือ เป็นไปได้ค่อนข้างยาก..
เพราะการขุดคลองตัดแบบนี้ ต้องผ่านเทือกเขา Hajar ที่อยู่ระหว่างยูเออีและโอมาน ซึ่งเป็นเทือกเขาที่มีความสูงชันและสลับซับซ้อน
โดยบางจุดมีความสูงกว่า 700 เมตร ถึง 1,500 เมตรเหนือระดับน้ำทะเลเลยทีเดียว
ความสูงขนาดนี้ ยังไม่ต้องนึกภาพเลยว่าต้องขุดดินออกเท่าไร ซึ่งมันตามมาด้วยงบประมาณในการก่อสร้างที่สูงขึ้นมากแน่ ๆ
แถมความสูงขนาดนี้ มันต่างจากการที่เราขุดคลองสุเอซและคลองปานามาเยอะมาก เพราะคลองสุเอซ เป็นการขุดคลองที่มีระดับเดียวกับน้ำทะเลอยู่แล้ว
ส่วนคลองปานามา แม้จะมีความสูงเหนือระดับน้ำทะเล แต่ก็สูงกว่าราว 26 เมตรเท่านั้น ไม่ได้เป็นหลักร้อยหรือพันเมตรแบบเทือกเขา Hajar เลยแม้แต่น้อย
ดังนั้น ถ้าจะขุดคลองลัดตรงนี้ ก็อาจต้องใช้วิธีแบบคลองปานามา ที่ต้องมีประตูกันน้ำเพื่อปรับระดับน้ำแล้วให้เรืออยู่ตรงกลาง แล้วค่อยปล่อยออกสู่ทะเลอีกฝั่งหนึ่งแทน
การทำแบบนั้น ก็ต้องมีแหล่งน้ำขนาดใหญ่ไว้คอยรองรับอยู่ตรงกลาง ซึ่งคลองปานามา มีทะเลสาบกาตุน ที่เป็นแหล่งน้ำจืดขนาดใหญ่ คอยรองรับเอาไว้อยู่แล้ว
แต่ตัดภาพกลับมาที่ดินแดนตะวันออกกลาง แหล่งน้ำขนาดใหญ่แบบนั้นก็หายาก ทำให้การทำแบบคลองปานามาก็ยิ่งยากขึ้นไปอีก
ดังนั้น การสร้างท่อน้ำมันแบบที่ซาอุดีอาระเบียหรือ
ยูเออีทำไปแล้วก็อาจจะคุ้มกว่าการขุดคลองลัดแบบนี้
แม้ส่งน้ำมันได้ในปริมาณที่จำกัดก็ตาม
และถ้าเราอยากส่งน้ำมันไปทางรถหรือรถไฟ ก็ต้องคิดต่อว่า ต้องขนส่งกี่เที่ยวถึงจะคุ้ม เพราะเรือขนส่งน้ำมันขนาดใหญ่มากหรือ VLCC 1 ลำ สามารถจุน้ำมันได้ถึง 2 ล้านบาร์เรล
รถขนส่งน้ำมันเต็มที่ก็ส่งได้แค่ 200 บาร์เรล แปลว่า ต้องมีรถขนส่งน้ำมันราว ๆ 10,000 คัน ถึงจะเท่ากับเรือขนส่งน้ำมันขนาดใหญ่มากแค่ลำเดียว..
สุดท้ายแล้ว ถ้าถามว่าโลกจะไม่ใช้ช่องแคบฮอร์มุซเพื่อส่งออกน้ำมันได้ไหม คำตอบคือ ได้ แต่ไม่ทั้งหมด
โดยเส้นทางที่เลี่ยงช่องแคบนี้ ก็คงหนีไม่พ้นท่อส่งน้ำมันขนาดใหญ่ไปยังอ่าวโอมานหรือทะเลแดงแทน
ซึ่งในอนาคต ก็คงต้องติดตามกันต่อไปว่า ประเทศแถบนี้จะมีโครงการอะไรเพื่อมาชดเชยความเสี่ยงจากการพึ่งพาช่องแคบฮอร์มุซที่มากเกินไปอีกหรือไม่
แต่สิ่งที่ยากกว่าการส่งน้ำมันผ่านท่อ นั่นก็คือ ก๊าซธรรมชาติเหลวหรือ LNG
เพราะ LNG ถูกทำให้เหมาะกับการขนส่งทางเรือระยะไกลด้วยการลดอุณหภูมิลง -162 องศาเซลเซียส
แต่ LNG ไม่สามารถส่งผ่านท่อระยะไกล เช่น ข้ามทวีป ซึ่งต้องใช้เรือบรรทุกเท่านั้น
เรียกได้ว่า การส่งน้ำมันโดยไม่ผ่านช่องแคบฮอร์มุซก็ว่ายากแล้ว การส่ง LNG โดยไม่ผ่านช่องแคบนี้

What if the World Bypassed the Strait of Hormuz ? Are There Any Real Alternatives ? /By Longtunman
As global tensions rise, the Strait of Hormuz is back in the spotlight. This narrow gateway handles an average of 20 million barrels of oil per day—effectively one-fifth of the world’s total petroleum consumption.
But here is the million-dollar question: If this chokepoint were to be closed, could the world’s oil flow through other veins ?
The short answer: Technically yes, but practically no. Even the best alternatives currently available cannot match the sheer volume of the Strait.
Here is the breakdown of the alternatives—and why they fall short.

To understand the situation, we first need to visualize the map.
Just outside the Strait of Hormuz lies the Gulf of Oman, which provides immediate access to the open ocean. Therefore, the most logical way to bypass the Strait is to transport oil overland and load it directly onto tankers in the Gulf of Oman.
One country has already turned this vision into reality: The United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE operates the Habshan-Fujairah pipeline, a 220-kilometer link that terminates at the port of Fujairah.
This project was spearheaded by Mubadala (an Abu Dhabi government investment arm) as far back as 2006, specifically to mitigate the strategic risk of a Hormuz blockade.
While strategic, this pipeline has a maximum capacity of only 1.5 million barrels per day. Compared to the 20 million barrels that typically traverse the Strait, this leaves a staggering 18.5 million barrels with nowhere to go.
The UAE isn't alone. Saudi Arabia made a massive bet on its East-West Pipeline, a behemoth stretching over 1,500 kilometers.
To put that distance into perspective: It is roughly the same as a straight line from the northernmost tip of Thailand (Mae Sai) to the southernmost point (Betong).
Built in the 1980s during the Iran-Iraq War, this system was designed to ensure that the Kingdom’s oil exports weren't "held hostage" by a single maritime route. The pipeline begins at Abqaiq in the Persian Gulf and cuts across the entire Arabian Peninsula to the port of Yanbu on the Red Sea.
Through continuous upgrades, Saudi Arabia has boosted this capacity to roughly 7 million barrels per day.
If we combine the bypass capacities of the UAE (1.5 million) and Saudi Arabia (7 million), we reach a total of 8.5 million barrels per day.
While impressive, it still fails to cover even half of the 20 million barrels that pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
Nations like Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain remain almost entirely dependent on the Strait. While Iraq has considered routes through Jordan or Syria to the Mediterranean, these projects remain largely on the drawing board due to regional instability.
If the "bird’s beak" of the peninsula is the problem, why not just dig a new canal to bypass the Strait ?
1. The Terrain: A bypass canal would have to cut through the Hajar Mountains. This range features rugged terrain with elevations between 700 and 1,500 meters above sea level.
2. The Scale: Unlike the Suez Canal, which is at sea level, or the Panama Canal, which climbs only 26 meters, a canal through the Hajar Mountains would require moving an unprecedented volume of earth.
3. The Water Source: To operate a "lock system" like Panama, you need a massive reservoir of water (like Gatun Lake) to lift the ships. In the middle of the desert, such a water source is non-existent.
For these reasons, building more pipelines—despite their limited capacity—remains far more viable than digging a "Middle Eastern Panama Canal."
Could we move the oil by land ? Let’s look at the math. A single VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) can carry 2 million barrels.
A standard fuel truck carries about 200 barrels. To replace just one supertanker, you would need a fleet of 10,000 trucks. The traffic, fuel costs, and logistics make this option entirely unfeasible for global supply.
Ultimately, if the question is whether the world could stop relying on the Strait of Hormuz for oil exports, the answer is yes—but only partially.
Any viable detour inevitably leads back to massive overland pipelines terminating at the Gulf of Oman or the Red Sea.
Moving forward, it remains to be seen whether regional powers will launch new, more ambitious projects to further hedge against the strategic risks of over-relying on this single, volatile chokepoint.
While bypassing the Strait for oil is difficult, bypassing it for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is nearly impossible.
LNG must be chilled to -162°C for transport. While oil is easily pumped through pipes, LNG is primarily designed for specialized ships. Moving it across continents via pipelines is technically complex and prohibitively expensive.
This leaves Qatar, which produces one-fifth of the world’s LNG, almost entirely tethered to the Strait of Hormuz.
