การใช้ there is / there are
สำหรับการใช้ there is และ there are จะแบ่งออกเป็น 3 รูป คือ
1. รูปอดีต
จะใช้เพื่อบอกว่า "เคยมี" อะไรบางอย่าง บางคน หรือบางตัว ณ ช่วงเวลาหนึ่งที่ผ่านมาแล้ว ซึ่งในปัจจุบันไม่มีอยู่แล้ว มักจะมีคำที่บ่งบอกเวลาติดมาด้วย เช่น yesterday / three days ago / last week / the day before เป็นต้น
รูปอดีตมี 2 แบบคือ there was และ there were
> there was ใช้กับคำนามเอกพจน์ หรือจำนวนแค่ 1 อย่าง
There was a dog sleeping here yesterday.
(เคย)มีสุนัขตัวหนึ่งนอนตรงนี้เมื่อวาน (วันนี้ไม่ได้นอนตรงนี้แล้ว)
a dog สุนัขมีจำนวน 1 ตัว จึงต้องใช้กับ there was
yesterday เป็นคำที่บอกช่วงเวลา ว่าเหตุการร์นี้เกิดขึ้นไปแล้ว
> there were ใช้กับคำนามพหูพจน์ หรือจำนวน 2 อย่างขึ้นไป
There were two apples on the table two days ago.
(เคย)มีแอปเปิ้ลสองผลวางบนโต๊ะเมื่อสองวันก่อน (ตอนนี้ไม่มีแอปเปิ้ลแล้ว)
two apples แอปเปิ้ลมีจำนวนสองผล จึงต้องใช้ there were
two days ago เป็นคำบอกช่วงเวลา ว่าเคยเกิดขึ้นไปแล้ว
2. รูปปัจจุบัน
จะใช้เพื่อบอกว่า "มี" อะไรบางอย่าง ณ ช่วงเวลาปัจจุบัน ซึ่งมองไปก็ยังเห็นสิ่งนั้นอยู่
รูปปัจจุบันมี 2 แบบคือ there is และ there are
> there is ใช้กับคำนามเอกพจน์ หรือจำนวนแค่ 1 อย่าง
There is a car in front of me.
มีรถหนึ่งคันอยู่ตรงหน้าฉัน (มองไปก็ยังเห็นรถอยู่)
a car รถมีจำนวน 1 คัน จึงต้องใช้กับ there is
> there are ใช้กับคำนามพหูพจน์ หรือจำนวน 2 อย่างขึ้นไป
There are four children swimming in the pool.
มีเด็กสี่คนว่ายน้ำอยู่ในสระ (มองไปก็ยังเห็นเด็กเล่นน้ำอยู่)
four children เด็นมีสีคน จึงต้องใช้ there are
3. รูปอนาคต
จะใช้เพื่อบอกว่า "มี" อะไรบางอย่างจะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคต มักจะมีคำบอกช่วงเวลาปรากฎอยู่ด้วย เช่น tomorrow / next week / the day after tomorrow เป็นต้น
มีอยู่แบบเดียวคือ there will be ซึ่งสามารถใช้กับคำนามได้ทุกจำนวน
There will be a farewell party tomorrow.
จะมีงานเลี้ยงอำลาพรุ่งนี้
There will be 500 people in the party.
จะมี 500 คนในงานเลี้ยง
ข้อสังเกต
การใช้ there is / there are ถ้ามีคำนามหลาย ๆ คำต่อกัน คำนามตัวแรกจะเป็นตัวกำหนดว่าจะต้องใช้ there is หรือ there are เช่น
There is a cat and a dog running in the park.
ใช้ there is เพราะคำนามตัวแรกที่ตามหลังมา คือ a cat เป็นเอกพจน์
There are two cats and a dog running in the park.
ใช้ there are เพราะ two cats เป็นคำนามตัวแรก และเป็นพหูพจน์
