Thinking about getting your first tattoo? Or actually getting another tattoo, can be a hard choice. Or even telling your peers you are getting one, there are more questions on “why” and less on “what” types of tattoos.
Even in today's world tattoos can be a taboo subject among families and friends. Tattoos does not look appropriate in the workplace or going to school/universities. Let’s not dig deep into Asian parents when you are getting another tattoo or your first tattoo. It seems you always have to hide your tattoo.
But getting back to the topic of what tattoos mean. This is a very broad and general term for what a tattoo can mean.
As for me personally, the meaning for tattoos is three fold.
Historically meaning dating back centuries
To repress your true self
It’s art
Let’s dig right in with the historically meaning of tattoo or symbolism
Historically/ Symbols of tattoos
It depends on your preference. I am never going to tell you what tattoo to ever get. As it is ink on your body and I do not want to use this negative word but ink forever.
You are the one deciding on what you want to get on your body. Different styles, art work, and shapes have historically meaning behind them.
For instance a tree tattoo can be interpreted into many different meanings. You can say a tree tattoo symbolize growth, a change of time, or symbolise countries such as Sakura trees in Japan. Certain elements of a tree such as leaves can represent a growth in time or in months as well.
On the hand you have full arm tattoos representing Japanese culture or tribes. You have the New Zealand tattoos or Mayan aztec tribe tattoos as well.
They are always a reason or a symbol behind each tattoo. Those symbols and meaning for each tattoo should resonate with you.
To represent your true self
There is an old saying or a picture that can mean a thousand words. Well, tattoo artwork is in the same category.
An emotion, a feeling, your concept of life might be able to be put into words. Is best to simplify in words for you to understand and explain it easier.
But with tattoo artwork, it can have the same meaning in the form in your body. To truly represent yourself to the world. This is me! This is how I feel, how I think and how I have an outlook in life.
A concept that resonates with you for a long time and will always continue with you. Yes they can be alternated in life with experiences. But the root is based on the concept you've been nurtured with.
Lastly in today's world to combine the meaning for tattoos is an art form.
Tattoo is an artform
Creativity is flourishing in today's world. In all type of industry. Be original.
What a tattoo means is a form of creativity between you and the tattoo artist. You have seen an art form and like it and want to match with your thoughts and lifestyle, well then here you go with tattoos.
A memory you want to cherish. A big turning point in life. An artform that will stay with you and it’s only for you.
The ultimate meaning of tattoos is always for you to decide for you to like.
What tattoo means is you are the one choosing to live with the concept and art form in life because it’s reasoned with you.
