In this chapter on Integrated Approaches from the book Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language (Celce-Murcia & el al., 2014), I explored diverse language teaching approaches like Content-Based Language Teaching (CBLT), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), using literature as content, and bilingual education. The focus is on integrating language learning with meaningful content, making it relevant to academic, professional, or cultural contexts.
CBLT caught my attention, especially the Six T's Approach, which structures themes, topics, texts, threads, tasks, and transitions. I found the application of the Sheltered model in secondary schools intriguing, as it integrates ESL students into regular content classes. Implementing the Adjunct model in my workplace communication course proved successful, aligning language skills with professional knowledge.
The chapter not only highlighted challenges, like the need for skilled educators, but also the substantial benefits, such as enriched learning experiences and improved language proficiency.
Reflecting on my teaching experience, I realized I've been employing the Adjunct Model of CBLT in my course on "English in Workplace Contexts." Coordinating language and content courses has enhanced my students' language skills alongside their professional knowledge, boosting their confidence in using English in practical scenarios.
The chapter's practical methodologies, like needs assessments in ESP, proved relevant to my teaching context. It encouraged me to tailor instruction to meet the specific needs and interests of my students. Overall, this chapter serves as a valuable guide, offering insights into effective language teaching methodologies and emphasizing the importance of personalized and contextually relevant instruction.
