Guinness World Records has declared a 30-year-old Portuguese dog, Bobi, as the oldest dog ever, surpassing a record held for a century.

Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo with an average life expectancy of 12 to 14 years, broke the previous record held by Australia's Bluey, who lived to 29 years and five months until 1939. As of February 1, Bobi was 30 years and 226 days old, confirmed by the Portuguese government's pet database managed by the National Union of Veterinarians.
Bobi has resided with the Costa family in Conqueiros near Portugal's west coast throughout his life, having escaped being put down as a puppy. Despite a brief health scare in 2018, Bobi has thrived in the Costa family's calm environment, enjoying a diet of human food.

While his longevity may be partly attributed to genetics—his mother lived to 18—Bobi now faces challenges such as difficulty walking and declining eyesight. Leonel Costa, Bobi's owner, describes him as the "last of a long generation of animals" and a unique companion.
Guinness World Records recently updated its records, officially naming Bobi both the oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever, just two weeks after recognizing Spike the Chihuahua as the oldest living dog at 23 years old.
On Monday, Guinness World Records announced the passing of Bobi, recognized as the world's oldest dog, at the age of 31 in Portugal. Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro Alentejano, spent his entire life in a central Portuguese village, achieving a lifespan of 31 years and 165 days.
This surpassed the longstanding record set in 1939 by an Australian cattle dog that lived to 29 years and five months. Karen Becker, a veterinarian who had met Bobi multiple times, shared the news of his death on social media, expressing that despite his remarkable longevity, Bobi's 11,478 days on earth would never be enough for those who cherished him. "Godspeed, Bobi," she added.
