Ever wondered why archaeology is so deep underground! Rome is an archaeological lasagne, if we dig down through the modern city, we will find layers and layers of time, perfectly preserved.

Rome has the largest number of catacombs in the world. These underground tunnels, dug by the first Christians were to bury their dead.
There are more than 60 Catacombs complexes, stretching over 400 kilometers. However, the best to visit in my opinion is Catacombs of San Callisto, an underground burial place in the Via Appia Antica. An area of 300 meters x 400 meters with intricate multi-layered networks of passages and chambers carved into the soft tufa.

In addition to the tombs, it has six sacramental chapels, with both pagan and early Christian wall paintings, such as baptism and scenes from the Old and New Testaments. In the Papal Crypt are the tombs of most of the martyred Popes of the 3rd century identified by Greek inscriptions.

The visit of catacombs takes about 30 minutes and must be done with a guide. No photo & vdo, I put some photos from book I purchased from catacombs souvenir shop.
