A short flight of steps, down into the atrium. This would be where the monumental statue of Hadrian would have stood, peering imperiously down at you. To its right is a winding spiral subterranean ramp, which is 2.74 meters wide and 5.48 meters high. This would have been used by the imperial funeral procession to transport the emperor’s ashes to their final resting place above.
Today, the ramp comes across as rather crude, but originally it almost certainly would have been paved with black and white mosaic, of which a few traces remain. The walls too, would have been covered in painted stucco.
Visitors ascend to its five floors on this spiral ramp.
Eventually, Hadrian’s ramp ends with a small doorway.
