Leica Store & Galerie Frankfurt: The Scent of Film, the Precision of Lenses
Leica Camera began in Germany and has since become the dream brand for photographers around the world. In Frankfurt, a turning point came in 2015 when Leica opened the Leica Store & Galerie Frankfurt, its very first flagship store in Germany. More than just a camera shop, it was designed as a seamless blend of gallery space, photography exhibitions, art displays, and a photobook corner. Spanning over 1,000 square meters, it was created to be nothing less than a true “center of photography.”
Leica Gallery Frankfurt quickly made waves with its inaugural exhibition in 2015, featuring two legendary photographers: Elliott Erwitt and Thomas Hoepker. Beyond this, Leica Galleries worldwide including Frankfurt have collaborated on major showcases such as “100 Years of Leica Photography.”
Having the opportunity to co-design an exhibition within the Leica Store was a truly special experience. The space is not merely a retail environment but a living arena where art, creativity, and human stories converge through the lens.
For this exhibition, we approached the design not simply as the placement of photographs, but as the creation of “conversations” between the artist and the audience. These conversations emerge through gazes, emotions, and memories: one image may reflect the quiet beauty of everyday life.
In Leica Store, photography is not just about presenting works it is about sharing a way of seeing the world. Our hope is that visitors do not merely look at photographs but feel their power: the ability to bridge past, present, and future.
This is not just an exhibition, but a record of a journey.
