Nothing in this world lives forever.
Yet some things remember longer than life itself.
Among them are mushrooms —
quiet, fragile, and ancient witnesses of the Earth’s story. 🍄
🌍 Mushrooms in Amber — Memory Preserved in Stone
In 2022, scientists from the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology
discovered perfectly preserved mushrooms in Burmese amber —
99 million years old, as reported by Cai et al. (Nature Communications, 2022).
They belonged to the order Agaricales —
the same umbrella-like fungi we see in modern forests today.
Astonishingly, their structure was almost identical.
“It’s as if mushrooms have never changed in nearly a hundred million years,”
the researchers said.
This fossil tells us something profound:
some forms of life do not need to evolve radically to survive —
they simply understand balance.

reveal that certain fungal lineages have retained ancient enzymes
