Located in the heart of the historic center, and it’s one of the most popular square of Rome. It was built on the site where the Stadium of Domitian (Circus Agonalis) founded in 86 AD, once stood. It could hold approximately 20,000 spectators which came here to see different athletic competitions.
Later, it was used for festivals and horse races during the Middle Ages, and was rebuilt in the Baroque style by Borromini. Although Borromini designed the square and its surrounding facades, it was his archrival; Bernini who created its centerpiece in 1651, the Baroque fountain, Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, the spirited fountain represents the four rivers.
