Harvard: A 390-Year-Old University Founded Before the United States Existed /By Longtunman
If we were to list the most influential universities in the world, “Harvard” would almost always be near the very top.
Did you know that Harvard is an academic institution that is nearly 400 years old ? It was founded before the United States became a country, back when the land was still a British colony, before gaining independence in 1776.
Beyond its academic reputation, Harvard is also known as a place that has produced some of the world’s most influential people, from presidents to global billionaires.
It also has its own fund worth more than 1.8 trillion baht, making it the largest university fund in the world.
So, what is interesting about Harvard University ?
Longtunman will explain.
Harvard is one of the Ivy League universities, a group of eight leading private universities in the United States. It is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
It was founded in 1636. If compared with Thai history, that would be around the middle Ayutthaya period. It was established by English clergymen who migrated to America with the goal of training scholars and religious ministers.
Originally, it was called “The New College” before later being renamed “Harvard” in honor of John Harvard, a clergyman who donated his wealth and books, helping lay the foundation for the institution.
After nearly four centuries, Harvard has become one of the highest standards in global education.
According to the latest 2026 QS World University Rankings, Harvard is ranked 5th in the world.
It is especially well known for several world-recognized faculties, such as:
- Harvard Business School (HBS), which stands out in MBA education and management, and is considered one of the world’s leading business schools
- Harvard Law School, one of the oldest and most respected law schools in the United States
- Harvard Medical School, widely known for advanced medical research and health sciences
- Harvard Kennedy School (JFK School of Government), which is highly recognized in public policy, politics, and governance.
Harvard is also known for being extremely competitive. In 2026, there were 61,220 applicants, but only 1,954 were accepted, which means the acceptance rate was just 3.2%.
Even though the average tuition fee is as high as 1.9-2 million baht per year, graduates from Harvard earn an average starting salary of around 270,000 baht per month, or nearly 3.2 million baht per year.
More importantly, what makes Harvard different from many other universities is that it has produced influential people in almost every field.
Harvard has produced 8 U.S. presidents. Some names that many people are familiar with include:
- John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from Harvard Kennedy School
- George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States, who earned a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School
- Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, who earned a doctoral degree from Harvard Law School
It also has the highest number of Nobel Prize-affiliated alumni in the world, with 161 people, such as:
- Gary Ruvkun, a researcher known for the discovery of microRNA, a small RNA molecule that plays an important role in controlling gene expression
- Roy J. Glauber, a physicist who pioneered the quantum theory of optical coherence, an important foundation of quantum optics
- Riccardo Giacconi, an astrophysicist who discovered cosmic X-ray sources and also pioneered the development of X-ray telescopes for detecting radiation from space
In addition, Harvard is one of the universities that has produced the most billionaires, or people with net assets of more than 1 billion U.S. dollars, with 127 alumni in total.
Some familiar names include Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg (even though both of them did not graduate), and Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates.
Another interesting point is that Harvard owns the largest university fund in the world. As of the end of fiscal year 2025, which ended in June, the fund had assets worth more than 1.8 trillion baht.
This fund is made up of the following assets:
- Private Equity 41%
- Hedge Funds 31%
- Public Equity 14%
- Real Estate 5%
- Others 9%
This fund is built from donations, known as an Endowment Fund, which has existed since 1974.
Its principle is to preserve the original capital and use only the income or returns from investments for spending, so the university can benefit over the long term. Harvard sets its payout rate at around 5%.
Income from this investment fund is considered Harvard’s main source of revenue, making up 37% of its total income, which is even more than the revenue it earns from education itself.
