Special EP 3: No More Costly Care! Introducing 'Time Bank': The Alternative Currency That Never Inflates

In EP 2, we saw the terrifying reality of the "inflation trap." Relying solely on "cash" for elderly care is becoming increasingly unstable. The higher the cost of fuel and living expenses skyrocket, the more our savings lose their value.
The question I left you with was... what if our family doesn't have enough cash to pay? Do we have any other options?
The answer is "Yes!" And it's something every person on this planet is born with in exactly equal amounts, whether you're a billionaire or a daily wage earner. That thing is "Time".
Today, I'll introduce you to a social innovation that will revolutionize the welfare sector: the "Time Bank".
1. What is a Time Bank and How Does it Work?
Simply put, a Time Bank is a system for exchanging help using "time" as currency instead of "cash".
The core principle is: 1 hour of helping someone else = 1 time credit deposited into your account.
Imagine this: Aunt Somsri (a healthy 60-year-old) spends 3 hours pushing a wheelchair to take Grandma Chuen (85 years old) to the doctor. Aunt Somsri earns "3 time credits" deposited into her Time Bank passbook.
In the future, if Aunt Somsri has a fall and cannot walk, she can withdraw those "3 time credits" to ask other community members to help care for her. This is saving an intangible asset that is truly reliable!
2. Why is a 'Time Bank' Resistant to Inflation and High Costs?
The biggest advantage that makes the Time Bank beat the cash system hands down is its "lack of volatility".
Suppose global oil prices jump to 50 baht a liter tomorrow, or the economy crashes completely. "1 hour of time" will always equal "1 hour". It never depreciates, has no exchange rate, and isn't taxed.
This system completely shatters the "wall of inequality." Even if your family relies on informal labor without a regular salary, as long as you have kindness, strength, and time, you can "pay" for your parents' care or save welfare for yourself without using a single baht.
3. How to Use the Time Bank for Elderly Care in Real Life? (Active Aging to Mutual Care)
In the research model I studied in Chiang Rai, we found this mechanism incredibly powerful in encouraging "Active Aging" individuals to become givers.
Many 60-70-year-olds still have abundant energy and skills. Instead of staying home lonely, they can come out to cook, clean, or read to bedbound seniors to accumulate "time" as life security for when their own bodies decline. This creates a Social Safety Net where community members truly support each other.
Is the Time Bank Alone... Enough?
While the Time Bank sounds like a wonderful ideal, in the real world, we can't deny that sometimes we still need "cash" to buy adult diapers, pay water and electricity bills, or purchase a hospital bed. A Time Bank floating alone without a supporting structure might not survive.
Therefore, in EP 4, we will look at the next puzzle piece to combine with the Time Bank: creating a "Community Enterprise", a fortress that will manage both "time" and "cash" to coexist sustainably... Stay tuned!
