London-based artificial intelligence startup “Papercup” has developed speech technology which automatically translates people’s voices into other languages. This technology will help creators and media companies reach audiences around the world.
The aim for Papercup is to allow producers to upload their videos, choose a target language and then receive a translated version with a synthetic voiceover by AI that is identical to human voices. In recent years, this technology has been used by big media like Sky News and some of the star creators in YouTube like Yoga with Adriene. More than 80 million people have watched videos translated by Papercup over a year.
Papercup CEO said that the main problem he sees is that most of the world’s videos are shackled to only a single language, and the original way of translating consumed high investment. The technology he created will level the playing field - allowing all forms of video and audio to be consumed in any language, therefore vastly multiplying the potential reach for all content creators.
In the near future, we might have the videos translated into over 100 languages, who’d have known.
