ในหลวงพระราชทานชื่อซอยอรุณมักกินนอน
Richard Barrow in Thailand
There are only a few roads in Bangkok that are named after foreigners. Outgoing Australian Ambassador Allan McKinnon has had the honour of having the road leading to his embassy named after him.
* His surname in Thai (มักกินนอน) translates as “likes to eat and sleep”
📌 Background story to this from the Australian Embassy:
The Australian Embassy has the honour to refer to the audience graciously granted by Their Majesties the King and Queen to H.E. Mr Allan McKinnon at the Ambara Villa, Dusit Palace, on 10 May 2022, prior to the completion of the Ambassador’s tour of duty.
The Ambassador gave a report to Their Majesties regarding the warm bilateral relations between Thailand and Australia, and was pleased to amuse Their Majesties by sharing the story of how his Thai surname is written by certain Thai news services, which translates into “likes to eat and sleep” and a Thai nickname “Arun” meaning “dawn”.
During the audience, leave was graciously given by His Majesty for the Ambassador to request that a name be given to the Soi on which the Embassy is located.
The Embassy has further the honour to announce that, on 11 May 2022, by His Majesty’s Grace, His Majesty the King has granted the name “Soi ArunMcKindnon” to the Soi.
