This Classic Steam Train Takes You to Thailand’s Ancient Capital

What a perfect way to experience a living history lesson while riding the rails. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) announced earlier this year that they are bringing back their historic steam locomotives for just seven special trips in 2026! Celebrating 129 years of service, the SRT is taking passengers back in time with a nostalgic one-day trip from Bangkok to Ayutthaya.
The timeless locomotives, No. 824 and 850, were built during the post-World War II era by Nippon Sharyo. They made their inaugural run in August 1949. Today, both trains are maintained at the Thonburi Locomotive Depot and hit the tracks only seven times a year.
Having already completed three runs during recent holidays, only two dates remain for the Ayutthaya route: 28th July and 23rd October. The other two trips of the year (12th August and 5th December) will head to Chachoengsao—Bangkok's hidden-gem neighbor and a popular temple-hopping spot for locals.
Tickets are priced at 799 THB for air-conditioned carriages, while budget-friendly third-class seats are just 329 THB for those who want to enjoy the fresh breeze along the way.
