Experts Call for Regulatory Reform to Accelerate Thailand's Electricity Liberalization
Energy experts have identified three critical issues-regulations, transmission infrastructure, and electricity pricing-that must be addressed to accelerate Thailand's transition toward electricity liberalization and greater adoption of solar energy.
The discussion took place during the seminar "Electricity Liberalization and Solar: Strengthening Grid Stability Amid Rising Electricity Costs", organized by the Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT) at National Engineering 2026.
Speakers emphasized that simplifying regulations, upgrading grid infrastructure, and reforming electricity pricing will be essential as Thailand moves toward a future where consumers increasingly become "prosumers"-both producing and consuming electricity.
Experts also highlighted the growing importance of Battery Energy Storage Systems (ESS), Grid Forming Inverters, Peer-to-Peer electricity trading, Wheeling Charges, and Direct Power Purchase Agreements (Direct PPA) in supporting a more flexible and competitive electricity market.
Government representatives noted that regulatory reforms are underway, including efforts to simplify solar installation permits and create a fairer electricity pricing structure while maintaining national energy security.
