Today is the start of Buddhist Lent Day, as known as Vassa.
This day marks the beginning of three lunar months during the rainy season. During these three months, all monks must stay in their temple and practice intensive meditation routines.
In Thailand, people of all ages celebrate the candle festival. Especially in Ubon Ratchathani province, where this festival holds significant value as a local tradition. Many people and groups will craft candles into delicate sculptures and organize a candle parade in the morning.
This tradition started in an ancient time when there was still no electricity, so monks require candles to study their Tripitaka. In addition to this, candlelight also has a symbolic meaning, which is wisdom or concentration. Therefore, it is believed that lighting a candle will help monks concentrate on studying Dharma and meditation.
