Chapter 3 (Episode 3) : Lunch, Warmth, and Accidental Belonging
Back in the nearby town of Numata, I found a cozy shokudō run by two elderly women who greeted me with bright, synchronized “Irasshaimase!”
They moved behind the counter like clockwork—efficient, calm, and somehow warm without trying.
I ordered oyakodon by pointing at the picture, my most reliable Japanese skill.
One of them placed a cup of hot tea in front of me without being asked—as if she’d read my face and decided I needed it.
The bowl arrived steaming: tender chicken, soft egg, rice soaking up soy and mirin like it had been waiting for this moment.
It tasted like home—despite home being thousands of kilometers away.
As I ate, the two women chatted and laughed quietly behind the counter. Outside, the late afternoon light softened into gold.
I’d planned to visit Lockheart Castle afterward—a Scottish transplant standing proudly in the Japanese countryside.
But when I arrived, a wedding was in progress.
Couples in tuxedos and kimonos posed gracefully against stone walls imported from Europe.
I stood there, windblown and muddy, suddenly aware that I did not belong in this picture.
So I did the polite thing.
I left.
I caught the last bus back, riding into dusk as the sky shifted from orange to violet beyond the window.
And for the first time, I thought:
Maybe solitude isn’t loneliness.
Maybe it’s just another name for freedom.

Oyakodon (親子丼) คืออะไร?
Oyakodon เป็นอาหารญี่ปุ่นแบบง่าย ๆ แต่คลาสสิกมาก
ชื่อแปลตรงตัวว่า “ข้าวหน้าพ่อ–ลูก” (ฟังดูแปลกนิด แต่มีความหมายดี)
🥢 ทำไมเรียกพ่อ–ลูก?
• ไก่ = พ่อแม่
• ไข่ = ลูก
ทั้งสองอย่างถูกปรุงรวมกันในชามเดียว เลยเรียกว่า oyako (親子 = พ่อแม่ลูก)
