Sway along at Prince Mahidol Hall
Some say that music is a great way to bring people of different cultures and ages together—and they aren't wrong. Even though orchestral music might seem intimidating to some, an experience at a finely curated music hall could easily change your mind.
We recently had the opportunity to attend SM Classics—a showcase of rearranged, timeless South Korean pop songs from SM Entertainment. Bringing K-pop classics into the present day under the baton of Thai conductor Thanapol Setabrahmana, this concert caught everyone's attention, amplified by a special guest appearance from Red Velvet’s own Wendy.
With a total of 17 songs plus an encore, it is impossible to single out just one reason why the show was so worthwhile. Wendy’s vocal technique was at its absolute best throughout her performance, seamlessly blending with Thanapol’s refreshing interpretations, which combined pop tracks with classic symphonic pieces. The show was clearly heavily inspired by legendary past composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Claude Debussy, and Sergei Rachmaninoff.
On a personal note, we had never heard Edward Elgar’s famous anthem “Pomp and Circumstance Marches” live before. It was deeply moving to hear it slot like a jigsaw piece into Girls’ Generation’s “Into the New World”—an all-time favourite for K-pop fans.
Even if you aren't a pop devotee, Prince Mahidol Hall hosts spectacular musical events throughout the year.
