To the Secretary 2
I'm not sure what it is
that makes me remember you.
Your markings.
Your meow.
Or the way you lie on your back.
All I know is,
back then,
I often saw you on the fourth floor
when the sky was still dark
and the lights in the building hadn't been turned on yet.
You would lie there in the hallway,
on your back,
with your legs sticking up in the air,
as if you didn't have a single thing to worry about.
While most people were rushing off to work.
I once took a photo of you
and sent it to a friend
because I thought it looked funny.
But what my friend saw
wasn't a cat.
Someone said you looked like grilled chicken.
And somehow,
someone ended up asking me to buy it for lunch.
All because of a photo
of one cat
lying there in the dark.
Every time I think about it,
I still laugh.
Time passed.
I moved rooms.
Moved floors.
Moved to a different corner of the building
where I lived my life.
From the fourth floor
down to the second.
But one thing never changed.
I still saw you.
Some days outside my room.
Some days by the stairs.
Some days in the hallway.
As if you'd never gone anywhere at all.
There were many times
when I thought
attachment must be something that takes time.
You have to know each other for a long time.
You have to go through a lot together.
But when I look at you,
I'm not so sure anymore.
Because between the two of us,
there were never any conversations.
No promises.
No understanding
that needed to be explained.
There was only
seeing each other again and again
in our everyday lives.
Until one day,
your presence
became part of a scene
I was used to seeing.
And strangely enough,
sometimes,
what makes us feel at ease
might not be words.
Not comfort.
Not the answer to any problem.
It might simply be knowing
that when I open the door,
there is still someone
lying on her back
in the same old place,
as if this world
hasn't completely changed yet.
And maybe
that's enough
for a day when I'm too tired
to ask anything more from life.
